[8:17]  1 tn The words “bring out” are not in the Hebrew text, but are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[8:17]  2 tn Following the Hiphil imperative, “bring out,” the three perfect verb forms with vav (ו) consecutive carry an imperatival nuance. For a discussion of the Hebrew construction here and the difficulty of translating it into English, see S. R. Driver, A Treatise on the Use of the Tenses in Hebrew, 124-25.

[8:17]  3 tn Heb “and let them swarm in the earth and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.”

[15:7]  4 tn Heb “And he said.”

[15:7]  5 sn I am the Lord. The Lord initiates the covenant-making ceremony with a declaration of who he is and what he has done for Abram. The same form appears at the beginning of the covenant made at Sinai (see Exod 20:1).

[15:7]  6 sn The phrase of the Chaldeans is a later editorial clarification for the readers, designating the location of Ur. From all evidence there would have been no Chaldeans in existence at this early date; they are known in the time of the neo-Babylonian empire in the first millennium b.c.

[18:7]  7 tn Heb “the young man.”

[18:7]  8 tn The construction uses the Piel preterite, “he hurried,” followed by the infinitive construct; the two probably form a verbal hendiadys: “he quickly prepared.”

[24:43]  9 tn Heb “the spring of water.”

[24:43]  10 tn Heb “and it will be.”

[33:18]  11 tn Heb “in front of.”

[38:9]  12 tn Heb “offspring.”

[38:9]  13 tn Heb “would not be his,” that is, legally speaking. Under the levirate system the child would be legally considered the child of his deceased brother.

[38:9]  14 tn The construction shows that this was a repeated practice and not merely one action.

[38:9]  sn The text makes it clear that the purpose of the custom was to produce an heir for the deceased brother. Onan had no intention of doing that. But he would have sex with the girl as much as he wished. He was willing to use the law to gratify his desires, but was not willing to do the responsible thing.

[38:9]  15 tn Heb “he went to.” This expression is a euphemism for sexual intercourse.

[38:9]  16 tn Heb “he spoiled [his semen] to the ground.” Onan withdrew prematurely and ejaculated on the ground to prevent his brother’s widow from becoming pregnant.

[38:24]  17 tn Heb “it was told to Judah, saying.”

[38:24]  18 tn Or “has been sexually promiscuous.” The verb may refer here to loose or promiscuous activity, not necessarily prostitution.

[38:24]  19 tn Heb “and also look, she is with child by prostitution.”

[38:28]  20 tn The word “child” has been supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.
